Anmerkungen

Bemerkungen The painting has been attributed to Filippo Mazzola. The subject has been speculated to be the music theorist Nicolò Burzio or composer Josquin Des Pres. Fallows (2009) examines the second hypothesis on the basis of the resemblance of the piece of music to Josquin's "Guillaume se va chaufer" and the text quoted from Pietro Bembo's Gli asolani, though he concedes it is difficult to reach a firm conclusion. Fallows dating of the painting to between January 1501-March 1505 is persuasive.
